Developing the Potential of Women and Training Volunteers

As members of the Portland metro community, we are inextricably linked to those around us and care deeply about the issues in our backyard. By preparing local women for a lifetime of civic leadership, we ensure that women will be ready and able to affect positive change for years to come, regardless of the issues tomorrow brings. As a result, our Members – known for their competence, eloquence and passion – are coveted by non-profit boards and organizations for their dedication and leadership skills.

Our timely, relevant, and engaging training events enhance the personal and professional development of JLP Members and equip them to fulfill a variety of roles within and beyond the organization. Most topics focus on transferable skills, customized to the unique needs of JLP Members and facilitated by professional facilitators, industry experts, and corporate trainers. Most JLP training events are offered at no charge for all JLP Members.

Training topics in past years have included:

  • Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
  • Self Defense
  • Resume Enhancement
  • Balance & Self-care
  • Entertaining
  • Salary Negotiation
  • Personal Branding & Confidence
  • Leadership & Influence
  • Home Organization
  • Fund Development
  • Mentorship Forums
  • Deceptions by NW Family Services – an awareness curriculum for middle and high school students about the dangers, prevalence, and warning signs of human trafficking
  • In Her Shoes by Washington Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence – an interactive program highlighting barriers to leaving, safety planning, and oppression of domestic abuse victims

Types of Training

Featured Training: Specialized training opportunities that focus on educating, mentoring and supporting JLP members to be the best volunteers and women they can be. Topics are selected and scheduled by the Training & Development Committee based on member suggestions, resource/facilitator availability, and current or projected needs within the League. These sessions are typically one-to-two hours in duration.

Leadership Summit: Our Annual Leadership Summit, held each spring, is a full day workshop experience focused on your development as a leader. In 2018, our Leadership Summit will be offered to all Members and the community.

AJLI Training Opportunities: JLP Members may attend AJLI conferences to develop skills and expertise necessary for their roles within JLP.  Please contact Nominating & Placement for information about a JLP scholarship to attend a conference.  JLP resources are prioritized to develop Members whose attendance aligns best with JLP initiatives.  JLP Members also have access to a wide range of on-demand training resources and live webinars through AJLI.
