Healthy Habits, Healthy Kids is a Junior League of Portland program dedicated to promoting lifelong healthy living for children and their families throughout the Portland community. This committee focuses on childhood wellness and safety through nutrition education, exercise promotion, positive lifestyle modifications and prevention instruction.
The Junior League of Portland coordinates special events supporting healthy lifestyle habits at community partner events, elementary schools, after school organizations, and farmer’s markets. Activities typically include kids yoga, food demonstrations, gardening, exercise, dental health, and much more.
The Junior League of Portland hosts community tables at local farmer’s markets where we educate the community about the hidden sugars in common children’s drinks and describe the recommended food portions from the government’s MyPlate initiative.
This year, 45 Junior League of Portland members participated in a kids yoga training workshop in partnership with Imagination Yoga. They learned yoga poses appropriate for children ages 2-12 as well as creative ways to teach children about kindness, concentration, calm and breath. They learned recommended physical activity for this age group, as well as the physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and language benefits of yoga that they can take into community partner events when working with children.
